Still life is where artists learn to truly see. It is the foundation of observational drawing and painting, and one of the most rewarding ways to develop your eye, your hand, and your understanding of light.

These private lessons are taught by a working still life artist whose studio practice is rooted in observation, everyday objects, and the quiet stories they tell. Whether you are brand new to art or returning to a practice you set aside, still life is one of the best places to build real, transferable skills.

What we cover:

• Setting up and reading a still life arrangement
• Understanding light, shadow, and form
• Drawing and painting from observation
• Value, proportion, and spatial relationships
• Developing patience and a slower, more intentional way of looking
• Working in your medium of choice

Sessions are 60 minutes and held virtually via Zoom or Google Meet, or in person for local students in the Charlottesville area. A materials list will be provided before your first session.
